There is a growing  body of evidence about using omega 3 for depression treatment

Depression is a major and quite debilitating psychological condition. Depression in it’s various forms can affect the lives of sufferers to a huge degree, and for this reason there is great interest in recent studies that have suggested that using dietary supplements containing Omega 3 for depression sufferers may well help reduce the incidence of this condition.

And it seems that there is a growing body of evidence that those who suffer from depression may well have powerful reasons to increase their intake of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids DHA and EPA.

The Omega 3 fat called DHA is the most prevalent fat in your brain. There is evidence that a low level of intake of DHA in the very early years, or even before birth, can slow the development of mental function as well as slow the development of cognition.

Of course this doesn’t mean that low levels of DHA cause depression, or even that increasing your intake of DHA will help reduce its incidence, but it does mean that there is evidence that your brain requires, for full and proper function, an adequate supply of DHA.

And there is also evidence from scientific studies in support of the conclusion that there is a solid link between low levels of Omega 3 and depression.Omega 3 and depression

A study quoted in Science Daily suggests that the use of supplements containing Omega 3 essential fatty acids can be effective for people with major depression, if they do not have anxiety disorders as well.

This study was undertaken by a professor at the University of Montréal and published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, and was at the time the largest study conducted on the effect of increasing the intake of Omega 3 as a strategy to help treat depression.

In fact there have been a range of studies about using Omega 3 for depression treatment, not all of them supporting the conclusion that using the essential fatty acids called the Omega 3 fats for treating depression is effective.

As, according to the study, somewhere around roughly 15 percent of people will suffer from an episode of major depression at some point in their lives, this is a serious health issue for many people, and is according to some one of the major health issues facing our society.

It is also estimated that depression is the worlds 4th leading cause of death and morbidity.

And so the effects of major depression cannot be underestimated.

Clearly more research needs to be done, however given that there is now solid evidence linking low intake of Omega 3 and depression, and also given that there are now studies suggesting that increasing the intake of Omega 3 may well help with such other conditions as ADD and ADHD, it is quite clear that, if you suffer from depression, there are powerful reasons to start eating more fish or to start taking fish oil supplements.

Even if increasing your intake of the Omega 3 fats doesn’t significantly improve your depression there is also no doubt that there is a wide range of other health benefits which may well be attracted from a better supply of Omega 3 in your diet.
