Why Add Omega 3 Fish Oil To Your Diet?
Why do you need Omega 3 fish oil in your diet? For your health of course
It’s very rare to find a health product that lives up to most of the claims made about how effective it is in improving your health. Very rare.
However an exception to that rule is the Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil. There is a wide range of claims made about the improvements that the Omega 3 essential fatty acids can make to your health, and there is significant and substantial medical evidence to back up those claims.
In fact it’s fair to say that the health benefits of adding more of the Omega 3 essential fatty acids to your diet, usually by taking high quality Omega 3 fish oil supplements, are now fully accepted by mainstream medicine.
And it is extremely rare that mainstream medicine accepts the claims made for more “alternative” health products. Mainstream medicine relies on drugs to achieve the desired health effects, and rarely supports the use of any health product that is perceived as “alternative”.
Medicine seeks to treat diseases and not to prevent them.
But mainstream medical organisations such as the American Heart Association now routinely recommend that each of us have a minimum amount of the Omega 3 essential fats, and in particular DHA, (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in our diet.
And there are many other medical organisations supporting these recommendations.
So let’s consider why the Omega 3 essential fatty acids found in fish oil are so essential to good health.
Your brain is made up of somewhere around 60 percent fat. Roughly half of that is DHA, the most important of the Omega 3 essential fats. DHA is essential to proper brain development in childhood and also to proper brain function.
Essentially our brain is powered by fat, provided it’s the right type. If it is deficient in DHA in the younger years it will not develop as well as it may otherwise develop, and cognitive function throughout life may be reduced.
There’s a wide range of mental disorders which have been shown in research to improve through improving the level of Omega3 fats in the diet. These include bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, postnatal depression, ADD and much more.
And it’s not just your brain that doesn’t work as effectively with too little Omega3 fats. There is much more than that.
So let’s consider more reasons why you should be adding high quality Omega3 fish oil supplements to your diet.
The American Heart Association, backed up by similar organisations in Australia, says that Omega 3 fatty acids will benefit the heart of healthy people as well as those with cardiovascular disease. In fact the heart health benefits of increasing your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids are substantial, including reducing your risk of dying from heart attack.
In Western society heart disease is one of the major killers, along with cancer. More Omega3 in your diet can help with both.
Increasing the amount of Omega 3 in your diet helps your blood flow through your veins better. It can help reduce triglycerides in your blood which are cholesterol like fats that may increase the risk of heart disease.
And research shows that more Omega 3 in the diet can help reduce heart rhythm abnormalities.
Omega 3 fats are a powerful anti-inflammatory. In other words they fight inflammation in your body. Inflammation is one of the causes of a wide range of health problems and lifestyle diseases, and reducing inflammation by increasing your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids can help prevent or reduce the symptoms of many of these health problems. Examples are:
Inflammation is one of the major causes of arthritis and taking high quality fish oil supplements can help reduce the pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
Inflammatory bowel disorder and Crohn’s disease
These too can be caused by inflammation, and it has been shown that anywhere up to 70 percent of people suffering from Crohn’s disease can stay symptom-free by Omega 3 supplementation.
Evidence is now building up that an adequate supply of the Omega3 fats is essential for proper development of the foetal brain.
Development of the brain starts during pregnancy, and pregnant women can assist in this by taking Omega 3 supplements, after appropriate consultation with their doctor.
And the supplements are not just for the benefit of the baby, nursing mothers also need an adequate supply of DHA and EPA as breastmilk is how this is passed from the mother to the baby. And of course the mother must have enough Omega3 fats for her own needs.
And the health benefits of the Omega3 fats don’t stop with the birth of the baby. Studies have shown that children with adequate levels of Omega3 fats frequently have a higher IQ, less ADD and ADHD and are less prone to hyperactivity.
Inflammation causes skin problems such as psoriasis. It is embarrassing and unpleasant, and supplementation of the diet with Omega 3 fats can help.
In fact one of the best things that women can do to keep their skin looking good generally, along with using high quality skin care products, is to keep their levels of the Omega3 fats high. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to the health of the skin, a little known fact.
Cancer is a major killer in Western society and there is now growing evidence that more of the Omega3 fats DHA and EPA in the diet can help guard against a range of cancers including breast cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer amongst others.
We could bore you
We could go on and on with the list of health problems which may benefit from Omega 3 supplementation with high quality Omega3 capsules. What we have listed above has just scratched the surface. But we’d rather not bore you.
What causes this problem?
Our diet no longer contains enough Omega 3 fats. The most important of the Omega3 fats, namely DHA and EPA, are found primarily in seafoods and in particular in oily fish. Fish made up a large part of our diet a century or so ago, however it no longer does. Fish in our diet has been replaced with such things as burgers and soda.
Our diet is now nutritionally deficient, not just in the Omega 3 fats but in other areas as well, however this deficiency in intake of the essential fatty acids is having substantial health repercussions.
And it is not just less fish in the diet, there’s more. Beef which is raised on grass also has Omega 3, but almost all of our beef is now grain fed and has very little Omega3, and more Omega 6 which is one of the bad fats.
The same applies to chickens as well as to eggs. Modern farming practices are profitable but are robbing us of many of the essential nutrients.
So how do you remedy this problem?
Of course you can eat more fish, provided it’s the right type of fish and you can get enough in your diet. But this has it’s own problems, particularly because of the buildup of toxins and in particular of Mercury in many of the fish that we now eat.
In fact the US government warns it’s citizens not to eat too much fish because of toxic contamination.
Fish is also become extremely expensive.
The solution is high quality fish oil supplements. The best fish oil supplements are entirely contamination free, because they use fish taken from the clean oceans near Antarctica, and each batch of oil is analysed before use, and the Certificate of Analysis that results from this analysis is published on the website of the manufacturer for all to see.
Not only that but high quality fish oil supplements are very cost-effective, and much more cost-effective than buying fish, and can therefore be taken every single day.
But there is much to learn about the differences between different brands of fish oil supplements. Many contain only small amounts of the active ingredients DHA and EPA, some have been found to be contaminated with toxins in the past and some may even be manufactured with rancid (old) fish oil.
So if you’re beginning to understand the importance of adding more of the Omega3 fats to your daily diet the best way is to do so by taking high quality fish oil supplements.
And that’s not all. Pay more attention to your diet generally by eating more fruit and vegetables and get more exercise, it’s all important.Written by - Omega 3 Fish Oil
